ST. PATRICK'S DAY - 17th March

We all know that when three-leaf clovers come out, it's St. Patrick's Day.
This Irish holiday is always celebrated on March 17th, which is the day that Saint Patrick died.
He was a missionary way back in the 4th century who converted the Irish to Christianity.

Did you know?

Green is associated with St. Patrick's Day because it is the colour of spring, Ireland and the shamrock.
Leprechauns are also associated with St. Patrick's Day, although the only reason they are is because they're Irish. Leprechauns are usually mean little creatures - with the exception of the Lucky Charms guy.
Don't forget to follow a leprechaun! You will find a pot of gold!!!!!

COMMONWEALTH DAY - 11th March 2013

This day is celebrated on the 2nd Monday of March.

The Commonwealth is a family of 54 countries, spread over every continent and ocean in the world. Although the people of the Commonwealth are different in many ways, they work together by sharing ideas and experiences, skills and knowledge.

About 30% of the world's population live in the Commonwealth. That's over 2 billion adults and children.

The Head of the Commonwealth is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth is Kamalesh Sharma, an Indian diplomat.

Every 4 years, all the countries come together to celebrate the Commonwealth Games, also known as the "friendly games" because it is the individuals who compete rather than the countries.

The next Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2014.

ST. DAVID'S DAY - 1st March

St. David's Day is the national day of Wales.

Saint David (known as Dewi Sant in the Welsh language) is the patron saint of Wales.

He was a Celtic monk who lived in the 6th Century and was Archbishop of Wales.

His influence is shown by the number of churches dedicated to him in Wales.
This day is commemorated by the wearing of daffodils or leeks by patriotic Welsh people. Both plants are traditionally regarded as the national emblem of Wales.

PRESIDENTS´DAY - 18th February 2013

George Washington was born on 22nd February, 1732.

Abraham Lincoln was born on 12th February, 1809.

Since February was such a good month for important American presidents' birthdays, the American government decided it would be a great idea to celebrate it with a National Holiday.

PRESIDENTS' DAY is celebrated on the third Monday of February every year.

It's a good time to remember some American presidents.
